H I 21 - cm absorption and unified schemes of active galactic nuclei

In a recent study of z > ∼ 0.1 active galactic nuclei (AGN), we found that 21-cm absorption has never been detected in objects in which the ultra-violet luminosity exceeds LUV ∼ 10 W Hz. In this paper, we further explore the implications that this has for the currently popular consensus that it is the orientation of the circumnuclear obscuring torus, invoked by unified schemes of AGN, which det...

The detectability of H I 21 - cm absorption in damped Lyman - α systems

In this paper we investigate the possible reasons why H I 21-cm absorption in damped Lyman-α systems (DLAs) has only been detected at low redshift: To date, no 21-cm absorption has yet been detected at zabs > 2.3 and at redshifts less than this, there is a mix of detections and non-detections in the DLAs searched. This has been attributed to the morphologies of the galaxies hosting the DLAs, wh...

GMRT detection of HI 21 cm - line absorption from the peculiar galaxy in Abell 2125

Using the recently completed Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope, we have detected the HI 21 cm-line absorption from the peculiar galaxy C153 in the galaxy cluster Abell 2125. The HI absorption is at a redshift of 0.2533, with a peak optical depth of 0.36. The full width at half minimum of the absorption line is 100 km s. The estimated column density of atomic Hydrogen is 0.7×1022(Ts/100) cm . The ...

Associated 21 - cm H i absorption towards the radio galaxy 3 C 452 ( J 2245 + 3941 )

We report the detection of 21-cm Hi absorption towards the core of the Fanaroff-Riley II radio galaxy 3C 452 (J2245+3941). The absorption profile is well resolved into three components; the strongest and narrowest component being coincident with the velocity corresponding to [O iii] emission lines while the other two components are blue-shifted with respect to it by ∼30 amd ∼115 km s −1. If the...

DICKE’S SUPERRADIANCE IN ASTROPHYSICS. I. THE 21 cm LINE

We have applied the concept of superradiance introduced by Dicke in 1954 to astrophysics by extending the corresponding analysis to the magnetic dipole interaction characterizing the atomic hydrogen 21 cm line. Although it is unlikely that superradiance could take place in thermally relaxed regions and that the lack of observational evidence of masers for this transition reduces the probability...
